Lived experiences of African American caregivers while caring for an African American diagnosed with a Mental Disorder

My name is Loren Moore, and I am currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Phoenix and working on my research study toward the completion of my dissertation in fulfillment of the requirement for achieving my degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD). My study is on the Lived experiences of African American caregivers while caring for an African American diagnosed with a mental disorder. I am interested in finding study participants for this qualitative study.

My study is significant for understanding the experiences of African American caregivers while caring for an African American diagnosed with a mental disorder. Sharing the experiences of previous caregivers may help other caregivers be more prepared to deal with possible challenges they may encounter. Future research can also assist people to learn about what African American caregivers experience on a personal level. Learning about the experiences can help support the caregivers to understand how to properly care for an African American diagnosed with a mental disorder. Future research can assist the caregivers and health care professionals to become better equipped to care for an African American diagnosed with a mental disorder.

Participation criteria include:

  • Must be an African American male or female between the ages of 25 and 65.
  • English-speaking African American Adult.
  • Must self-report they care for or know someone that is caring for an African American diagnosed with a mental disorder.
  • Reside with and/or help an African American diagnosed with a mental disorder with day to day activities.

If you are caring for, have an African American family member, friend, or someone in the community that are caring for an African American diagnosed with a mental disorder that is eligible to participate in the study, you will be asked to do a one-to-one audio recorded telephonic or virtual interview (i.e., Zoom, Skype, Microsoft Teams, or any preferred video conference app that you are comfortable using) at a time agreed upon with the researcher to answer questions on your perceptions and every day lived experience in caring for an African American diagnosed with a mental disorder. It is anticipated the interview will last approximately one hour. Your participation is fully voluntary. If interested in participating in this study and if you have questions, please email the Principal Investigator [email protected]. Please title your subject line as, “Research Participant.”

If you are eligible and interested in participating in this study, read the consent form first located at https://lorencm.s3.amazonaws.com/Informed+Consent.docx. If you plan to participate, print the consent form, and save it for your records. This is a great opportunity to contribute to the nursing body of knowledge.
